Donuts.

I was thinking about what to write and felt confident about two things. People love lists. People love donuts. So I’ve combined two things that I know people love… and here you go! The Perri’s Top 5 Donut Shops.

I get it, taste is in the mouth of the beholder (I know that isn’t the correct word, but I’m not sure what to use in its place, so I left it), but donuts are delicious and I feel like it’s my duty to let you know about the delicious ones we’ve had the pleasure of experiencing.

Vortex Donuts

32 Banks Ave #106, Asheville, NC 28801

When Bob and I recently planned a weekend getaway to Asheville, we immediately added a visit to Vortex Donuts to our must visit  list. When we arrived, the full parking lot and lack of seats inside confirmed this was a popular spot. That didn’t deter us as we don’t need chairs to eat donuts. Vortex offers two types of donuts- cake and yeast. While I am not picky about donuts, yeast donuts are my favorite so I chose that kind. They had 6-8 of the same flavors in both the cake and yeast options. I picked the vanilla glaze donut and Bob chose the “Rotating Tap” option which was essentially a donut with a beer flavored icing. If you haven’t been to Asheville before, just know that everything revolves around beer. Everything. Don’t worry if you don’t like beer, there is still delicious food to eat. But if you like beer, you’ll be in heaven.  Definitely worth checking out if you are even in Asheville! It’s located right next to Buxton BBQ which we didn’t get to check out this time, but I’m going to require a stop our next trip.

Duck Donuts

multiple locations

Unlike the other 4 on this list, Duck Donuts has multiple locations so you should check to see if you have one close by! I know for sure that there is one in VA Beach, Charlottesville, VA and Huntersville, NC. At Duck Donuts, you don’t have to stick to pre-selected donut flavors (although you can if making your own causes you too much anxiety). You can select from many delicious options and configure your dream donut. It’s then prepared right in front of you and hand-delivered to you, in all its warm sugary goodness.

Miss Joy’s Absolutely Fabulous Treats

1008 Commerce Street, Lynchburg VA 24504

Miss Joy’s Absolutely Fabulous Treats is a local Lynchburg, VA establishment. Bob and I first met her at a Bridal Expo, wherein the overwhelming sea of wedding vendors trying to get your attention and money, she won us over simply by having the most delicious cake pops. She hadn’t opened her store yet, but a month or so later, it was open and we were so excited to check it out! That’s when we discovered that as delicious as her cake pops were, her glazed donuts were even better. If you live in Lynchburg- get downtown and visit her!

So Mama Crockett holds a special place in our hearts as we skipped the wedding cake and had Mama Crocketts bring their donut truck to our wedding reception and serve their amazing delicious apple-cider donuts to our family and friends. If you are from Lynchburg, you would probably recognize their cute donut trailer that pops up in various places around town throughout the week. And if you are from Lynchburg and haven’t tried their donuts yet, you are crazy. They usually make them fresh when you order them and you are handed a brown paper bag of piping hot, cinnamon sugar covered, apple-cider donuts. I’m running out of synonyms for delicious- but let’s just say they are delightful, tasty, pleasurable, yummy. Do you get the idea?

Granny’s Old Fashioned Donuts

Mooresville, NC Area Food Truck

Bob and I discovered Grandma’s Old Fashioned Donuts shortly after moving to NC. One of our favorite things to do in Lynchburg on Saturday mornings was to visit the downtown market, usually with a cup of Joe Beans coffee (trust me, when I make my favorite coffee list, they will top it). When we moved to NC, we arrived near the end of farmer’s market season but we were able to get to a year-round one in Mooresville a few times. The first time we got there, it was a really cold day and the sign for “Fresh, Hot Donuts” was all I could focus on. We came for fresh veggies, but of course, I had to find and eat the donuts. Anyways, Bob and I are in complete agreement that these donuts top our list of favorite donuts. It could be because they are hot and fresh. It could be because they are light and airy. It could be because they are covered in sugar. But if eating these donuts are wrong, I just don’t care about being right. They are that good that I just used that really corny line. If you are ever in the area and have a hankering for a donut, I highly recommend doing yourself a favor and find Grandma’s!

By the way, I have barely any pictures at all, because I don’t play when it comes to donuts. I just don’t have the time (or self-control) to take a picture.

So these are my top 5 and I’m pretty confident in this list. But I know that there are so many more donuts out there that I haven’t experienced yet. What would top your list? Give me your top 5! I’m willing to be the test subject and try them out. 😊

  1. We went to Cold Hollow cider mill in Vermont and they make fresh apple cider in the store and in turn make fresh cider donuts! They were pretty amazing! 🙂
